What is Matchmove, Rotomation + Layout?

Why are they so crucial for successful VFX?

We are all familiar with visual effects (VFX). It is an integral part of visual storytelling. VFX tells and supports the story so that you, the audience, come along for the journey and are thoroughly entertained!

VFX can include:

  • Complex characters with tentacles or fur, superheroes going head to head with intergalactic villains, or dinosaurs rampaging through jungles.
  • Huge environments that transport the audience to ancient Rome, take them to an LA of the future, or depict a New York that has been utterly destroyed.
  • Intricate FX that bring floods, fires, explosions, magic or destruction to life on the big (or small) screen.


But what are VFX? How are they created? And why are Matchmove, Rotomation and Layout so crucial to their success?

VFX are the computer generated images (CGI) added to shots to bring a story to life. Not to be confused with special effects (SFX) – the practical or mechanical effects captured in camera.

Most of our favourite films and TV shows are full of VFX! You need CGI whenever you need to add something to a shot that is:

  • Too costly to shoot in camera
  • Too dangerous to shoot in camera
  • Impossible (physics won’t allow it)

CG elements can be:

  • Environments (ancient Egypt, futuristic Los Angeles)
  • Assets (trees, cars, spaceships)
  • Animated characters (animals, people, monsters, superheroes)
  • FX (fire, water, magic, destruction)

To be effective, the VFX needs to be believable. Each VFX artist works incredibly hard to integrate their CG into the shot and ‘bed it in’ convincingly. After all, the best VFX are the ones you can’t see!

In order for CG elements to integrate seamlessly with the plate, they need to be placed in a 3D scene that lines up perfectly with it. And this is where Lunar FX comes in.

3D Scene

The virtual, digital 3D environment built within specialised software (Maya, Blender, or Houdini) used to create or integrate CGI with live-action footage.

Asset

The digital versions of props, costumes, sets, or actors which VFX artists use to construct the final shot.

Camera solve

The result of the tracking process; the calculated, accurate data for the virtual camera or object movement.

CG

In a VFX context, it refers to all 3D generated elements added to a shot.

Character rig

A complex internal digital structure (a skeleton and control system) within a 3D character model. Used to pose, manipulate and animate the model.

Downstream

Subsequent departments in the VFX pipeline that receive data from Matchmove and Layout.

Geometry

The core data that defines the volume, edges, and surfaces of any CG element.

Ground plane

The horizontal surface within the 3D environment representing the real-world ground or floor on which the live-action was shot.

Live footage

Any video material shot using a real-world camera to record the actors, objects, and environments.

Plate

The original live-action footage used as the starting point for a visual effects shot.

Rig

The digital skeleton or control system within a 3D model that artists use to control movement. Often used for rigid body objects like spaceships or cars.

Sequence

Series of related shots that form a single dramatic or narrative unit.

Shot

A single, continuous strip of footage, starting at one camera cut and ending at the next. The basic unit of VFX work.

Wire frame

A representation in 3D of the geometry of the scene or objects. Used by matchmove artists to show and check the accuracy of their work.

Matchmove, also known as 3D camera tracking or tracking, is the first step in the VFX pipeline to have CG elements integrated into a live action shot.

The goal is to create a 3D camera that exactly matches the movement and dynamics of the live action camera. Then, when a CG asset is placed into the scene, it looks correct in terms of size, scale and positioning.

Why is this important?

For an audience to believe what they are seeing, it needs to look real and authentic. A solid camera solve ensures that the CG is convincingly grounded in the real world.

Let’s paint a pixel…

Imagine a shot of the savannah. The Zebras are missing, so we need to add two CG zebras walking across the plain. The matchmove camera needs to accurately show in 3D where the ground is. If the ground plane is too low, the zebras may look like their feet go through the ground. If too high, they’ll look like they’re floating.

When the camera is perfect, the hooves will look like they are standing on the ground — allowing animators, lighting artists and FX departments to all build convincingly on top of that foundation.

How do we do it?

We use specialised software which analyses data from the camera. First, we choose reference points within the plate (tracking markers or other reference points like building corners, cars or rocks). The software analyses the changes and movements of these reference points as the physical camera moves, then calculates the move in virtual space.

When you have a dynamic shot with motion blur or other artefacts, our matchmove artists use their expertise to manually track reference points with precision and care.

 

Object tracking is used when something within the shot is moving independently of the camera — a car driving, a hand reaching out, or a prop being thrown. Rather than just tracking the camera, we track the specific object so CG elements can be attached to it and move convincingly in sync.

This is critical whenever CG needs to interact with or replace a real-world moving object in the shot. Like matchmove, the accuracy of object tracking directly affects the quality of every downstream department working on that shot.

Rotomation is the process of creating an animated 3D model that exactly replicates the movement of a real-world object or person in a shot — frame by frame.

It is used when object tracking alone isn’t sufficient, typically when an object or person deforms (moves in a non-rigid way), is obscured, or doesn’t have enough visible tracking data.

The rotomation artist manually animates a 3D rig to match the live-action reference. This is painstaking, skilled work that requires both technical knowledge and a strong eye for movement and timing.

Why is it important?

Rotomation is essential for shots where CG and live action interact closely. If a CGI character needs to hold hands with an actor, or a digital costume needs to move exactly with a performer’s body, rotomation provides the precise data needed. Without it, the interaction would look unconvincing.

Layout is the department responsible for placing all the CG elements (characters, props, sets, environments) into the 3D scene in a way that matches the director’s vision and the live-action plate.

Layout artists work closely with the camera solve from matchmove to ensure that every asset is placed with correct scale, position, and orientation. They also block out camera moves for fully CG shots.

Why is it important?

Layout is the bridge between matchmove and every downstream department (animation, lighting, FX, compositing). If layout is wrong, every department that follows will be working from an incorrect foundation — costing significant time and money to fix.

A well-executed layout means animators can work confidently, lighters know where the camera is, and compositors can trust what they receive.

Matchmove, Rotomation and Layout are the unsung heroes of the VFX pipeline. They are rarely talked about in behind-the-scenes content, but without them nothing else works.

They are the foundation upon which every other department builds. When they are done well, audiences never notice — which is exactly the point. When they are done poorly, even the best animation, lighting and FX work cannot save the shot.
